Firefighter Honored
The President of the Vincennes Township Fire District Board of Trustees has been named the
Indiana Volunteer Firefighter Association's firefighter of the year.
Jack Harker was honored during the group's
annual convention earlier this month.
The award is in recognition for his hard work and dedication to the volunteer fire
service both locally and on a state level.
Harker has been associated with the Vincennes Township Fire Department for
45-years. He has served as firefighter, captain, assistant chief, treasurer currently serves as President of the District
Board of Trustees.
Linton Bomb Threat
A bomb threat at the Linton Wal Mart closed the store for over 7 hours yesterday morning.
The threat was called
in at 4:40-am Thursday. When law enforcement arrived the building was evacuated and a search began.
Linton Police say
the search was conducted until noon and nothing was found. The store then opened an hour later.
An unknown caller called
in the threat. Police say the investigation is continuing.

I-69 Groundbreaking
Officials
are taking steps to prevent
protesters from disrupting a groundbreaking ceremony for the first
segment of the Interstate
69 extension project.
Officials say the invitation-only event will be held the week of July 13, but they are not revealing
the date or location.
The groundbreaking is being organized by Hoosier Voices for I-69, a group that lobbied for the
road's construction.
The 142-mile highway will link Indianapolis and Evansville. The first segment is being constructed
in Gibson
County.
Civil War Statute
The Re-dedication of
the Knox County Soldiers and Sailors Civil War Monument will take place this afternoon at two o'clock on the courthouse
lawn.
Knox County Superior Court-Two Judge Jim Osborne has been part of a committee that has put together an informational
exhibit that tells the history of the monument and the soldiers which they honor.
Osborne says
four new granite stones honoring Knox County Soldiers who fought in other conflicts will also be unveiled.
New landscaping,
shrubbery and lights have been added to enhance the site.
The public is invited to attend the ceremony which gets underway at
2 p.m.
Fourth of July Activities
The City of Vincennes' Fourth of July Parade
will take place this afternoon at 5 p.m.
The parade route
will begin at Second and Hart Streets, then to Seventh and Hart, Seventh to Main Street, Main Street to Second Street and Second
Street to Broadway Street. Parade headquarters will be located in the Tade Building on the corner
of First and Hart Streets.
Vincennes University will sponsor a "Patriotic Concert
on the Green" on the steps of the George Rogers Clark Memorial before the annual fireworks display.
The event will
begin at 9:15 p.m. with fireworks display at dusk.
Fireworks Safety
Vincennes Fire Chief Mike Lankford reminds area residents to follow some simple safety guidlines when using fireworks
this Fourth of July.
Lankford says that all fireworks should be set off under adult supervision. He says never to let
young children play with fireworks.
When lighting fireworks, Lankford says to do so in an open area and keep spectators
far back. He also says to be aware of the wind direction and always wear safety glasses.
Lankford
also reminds people to keep a water supply nearby to put out a fire if one should occur.
Tour De Tree
Members of the TREE Fund will be cycling through Vincennes this month.
Vincennes Tree Board President Mark Welte says TREE Fund stands for Tree Research, Education and Endowment.
The organization
provides money for tree projects and programs that benefit people, trees and the environment.
Welte says some of
the group's members will be riding their bikes from Indianapolis to St. Louis for their national meeting, stopping in
Vincennes on July 22nd.
Welte says a program will be held at Gregg Park and will include activities for children and
adults.
Welte says a time for the program has not yet been set. And he says it's an honor
to have the group stop in Vincennes.
